The month of November saw the 822nd suffer more losses than any month of combat during WWII. The Group had been striking the Japanese airfields in the southern Philipines in suport of the Battle for Leyte when a large Japanese convoy was reported in route to Leyte with reinforcements. The 38th was assigned the mission to attack the convoy. The lead element was the 822nd. The 38th was awarded their 4 th DUC for the mission.
